Sun, salt and good vibes are a constant during summer at Mooloolaba Beach. But as the mercury climbs, so too do the number of beach goers complaining of headaches, nausea
dizziness and tiredness. And we get it: sometimes there’s just so much fun in the sun, we forget to stop and hydrate. Each summer we help hundreds of Mooloolaba Beach Pharmacy customers alleviate the symptoms of dehydration after a big day on the sand, and there’s one product we recommend above all others to relieve them.
But I’m in the water all day. How do I become dehydrated?
Sorry, but just being in the water doesn’t mean you’re actually absorbing moisture. Your body is about 60% water. A visit to the beach during summer will have you sweating in the heat before you hit the waves. Once in, all that swimming, playing and exercise in the water causes further stress to your body’s moisture levels.
Maintaining a good hydration level regulates your temperature, keeps your joints lubricated, and allows your organs to function optimally. Replenishing the electrolytes you lose through sweat due to both heat and exercise is essential to coming off the beach ready for the next adventure, not looking for a way to stave off dizziness and headaches.
Signs of Dehydration
Any of the following can be symptoms of dehydration:
- sticky or dry mouth
- dark yellow urine
- headaches
- dry skin
- fatigue
- nausea
- dizziness
- tiredness
If you experience just one of these, it is highly likely you’re already dehydrated. Drinking water will obviously help, but if you are suffering any of these symptoms, it’s best to go straight for an electrolyte rich drink like Hydralyte. We’ve found Hydralyte to be incomparable at relieving dehydration in our customers, not to mention a LOT more economical than those fluorescent coloured ‘sports’ drink.
Hydralyte comes in a variety of forms, from packs of multiple powder sachets and effervescent tablets added to water, to ready-to-drink bottles. There are a large number of flavours, and have no added gluten, artificial colours, flavours and preservatives. Hydralyte even has formulas with extra vitamins, collagen or liver supporting properties. Pop into the Mooloolaba Beach Pharmacy and have a chat with our friendly staff about which is right for you!
Hydration Tips for the Beach
Of course, prevention is better than cure:
- Drink Before You Feel Thirsty: Don’t wait until your mouth is dry and the edges of a headache are forming. Hit the beach with plenty of water and sip it regularly.
- Set Reminders: Use your phone or a smartwatch to set reminders every hour to drink water.
- Electrolyte Drinks: For long days at the beach, consider bringing along electrolyte-rich beverages. Coconut water and sports drinks are good, but Hydralyten is without doubt the best, and comes in a handy water and sand-proof tube or sachets. Just pop a tablet into your water bottle, drink and have peace of mind all day.\
- Choose Hydrating Snacks: Fruits like watermelon, oranges, and cucumbers have a high water content, taste great and are great for you.
- Stay Cool: Take an umbrella or pop into Mooloolaba Beach Pharmacy for one of our Cool Cabanas and wear a hat (we also stock plenty of these). Reducing your exposure to direct sunlight can help decrease your body’s need for water.
- Limit Alcohol and Caffeine: Alcohol is not permitted on Mooloolaba Beach, but that doesn’t mean you mightn’t still be feeling the effects of last night’s cocktail. A delicious coffee on the sand is another of life’s simple pleasures, but all that caffeine is dehydrating too. Alcohol and caffeine dehydrate the body: plan ahead with plenty of water and if you start to feel those symptoms, add a Hydralyte tablet to your drink bottle.
The team at Mooloolaba Beach Pharmacy are used to seeing cases of dehydration in customers over the summer months. We’re just across the Esplanade from the sand: come in and we’ll help alleviate those symptoms of a great day on the beach quickly and effectively.
